Understanding Leather Grain
Leather descriptions can be confusing when you are comparing products. Start by separating the words used to describe the hide from the words used to describe its finish and appearance.

What does grain mean?
Grain refers to the outer surface of the hide. Its texture and visible markings can vary, so two pieces of leather may not look identical even when they belong to the same broad category.
Terms such as full-grain describe how the grain layer is used; they do not, on their own, tell you everything about thickness, softness, coating, colour or long-term performance.
Look beyond the label
When comparing a wallet, bag or sleeve, check the product's material description, finish, construction, dimensions and care guidance together. Ask the seller for clarification if a material term is not explained.
Natural-looking marks and variation may be part of a material's character. A photograph alone cannot confirm the exact leather grade or how a product will feel in person.
Questions to ask before buying
Use the product listing and seller's answers to understand what you are purchasing rather than relying on a single label.
- Is the leather type and finish clearly stated?
- Are dimensions, lining and construction described?
- Is product-specific care guidance available?
- Can the seller clarify how colour or texture may vary?
This guide provides general information, not a guarantee of how a specific item will perform. Follow the care information supplied with your product.
